How to Choose the Right Needle

Match size to fabric weight first, then match point type to fabric structure. For example: quilting cotton generally takes an 80/12 Universal; a stretch jersey T-shirt takes a 70/10 or 80/12 Ballpoint or Stretch needle; raw denim takes a 90/14 or 100/16 Denim needle; and genuine leather takes a 90/14 Leather needle. When a fabric doesn't fit neatly into one category — a heavy stretch knit, for instance — size up slightly and choose the point type for the fabric's structure (knit vs. woven) over its weight.
