The sewing machine is one of the most important machines in garment manufacturing. It replaces slow, inconsistent hand stitching with fast, uniform stitch formation, which is why every garment factory, tailoring shop and textile training program relies on it.

A sewing machine is a mechanical (or mechatronic) device that forms stitches by interlacing one or more threads through fabric. It was developed during the Industrial Revolution to reduce manual sewing labor, and while modern machines have added electronics and automation, the core mechanism of needle, hook (or looper) and feed system has changed very little.

Every part of a sewing machine works together in a fixed sequence to form a stitch, so understanding each part individually also explains how the machine works as a whole. This article lists every major part of a domestic/industrial lockstitch sewing machine and explains exactly what it does.

Functions of Sewing Machine Parts

The function of each part is explained below in the order a stitch is actually formed — from thread supply, through stitch formation, to fabric feeding.

Spool Holder

The spool holder holds the thread spool and controls the direction the thread comes off the spool. It may be horizontal or vertical, and a machine may have more than one spool holder when a decorative or twin-needle stitch requires two threads.

Bobbin

The bobbin is a small spool wound with thread that supplies the lower (bottom) thread during stitch formation. It sits inside the bobbin case, beneath the needle plate. 

Bobbin Case

The bobbin case holds the bobbin in position inside the hook assembly. As the needle carries the upper thread down and back up, the machine's hook catches the loop of needle thread and carries it around the bobbin case, interlacing it with the bobbin thread. This interlacing of needle thread and bobbin thread is what forms a lockstitch (see difference between chain stitch and lock stitch for how this compares to chain stitch formation).

Thread guides control the path of the thread from the spool to the needle and keep a steady, even supply of thread moving through the machine without tangling.

Tension Regulator

The tension regulator (tension dial) controls how tightly or loosely the upper thread is held as it feeds through the machine. Correct tension balances the needle thread against the bobbin thread; incorrect tension is one of the most common causes of loose stitches, puckered seams, or thread breakage.

Thread Take-Up Lever

The thread take-up lever does not thread the needle. Its job happens after the needle has penetrated the fabric and the hook has caught the needle-thread loop: the lever rises sharply and pulls the slack thread back up, drawing the interlaced loop up into the fabric and setting (tightening) the stitch. It then feeds fresh slack thread down for the next needle penetration. Its motion is timed precisely with the needle bar and feed mechanism — if this timing is disturbed (for example by incorrect threading), the result is skipped stitches, thread breakage, or thread bunching under the fabric.

Presser-Bar Lifter

The presser-bar lifter raises and lowers the presser foot, allowing the operator to insert, reposition, or remove fabric, and to release pressure on the feed dog when needed.

Stitch Length Regulator

This control sets how far the feed dog advances the fabric between needle penetrations, which determines stitch length. The ideal stitch length depends on fabric weight and the thread being used — heavier fabrics generally take a longer stitch.

Balance Wheel (Handwheel)

The balance wheel (handwheel), located on the right side of the machine, lets the operator raise or lower the needle by hand for precise positioning — useful when starting a seam, changing direction, or clearing a jam. On many domestic machines it also drives the bobbin winder when disengaged from the main drive shaft.

Bobbin Winder

The bobbin winder, located on top of the machine near the spool, winds thread evenly onto an empty bobbin before it is loaded into the bobbin case. 

Slide Plate

The slide plate is a small removable cover beside the presser foot that gives access to the bobbin case, allowing the bobbin to be removed or replaced without dismantling the machine.

Feed Dog

The feed dog is a set of toothed metal bars beneath the needle plate that grip the underside of the fabric and advance it a fixed distance — set by the stitch length regulator — between each needle penetration. It moves in a four-part motion: rising into the fabric, moving it forward (or backward, when the reverse stitch lever is engaged), dropping below the plate, and returning to its starting position. It works together with the presser foot, which holds the fabric down against it.

Presser Foot

The presser foot holds the fabric firmly against the feed dog so it feeds through evenly instead of lifting with the needle. Correct presser-foot pressure prevents puckering and skipped stitches; too little pressure lets the fabric shift, and too much can mark delicate fabric.

Needle Clamp and Needle Bar

The needle clamp is a small screw-and-collar fitting on the needle bar that holds the needle securely in place and fixes its orientation. The needle bar moves the needle up and down in time with the hook and feed dog to form each stitch.

Needle

The needle carries the upper thread through the fabric and forms the loop that the hook (or looper) catches to create the stitch. Needle size and point type are chosen to match the fabric being sewn.

Power Switch

The power switch, usually on the right side of the machine, turns the motor on and off. On most modern machines it also switches on an integrated sewing light.

Foot Pedal

The foot pedal controls sewing speed — more pressure drives the machine faster — and on electronic machines often also starts and stops stitching.

Reverse Stitch (Back-Sew) Lever

The reverse stitch lever or button reverses the feed dog's direction so the machine sews backward over the last few stitches. This "back-tacking" locks the seam's start and end so it cannot unravel.

What is the most important part of a sewing machine?

The needle and the hook (working with the bobbin case) are the two parts that actually form the stitch, so a fault in either usually stops the machine from sewing correctly. But every part in this list must work together — a wrongly timed take-up lever or a damaged feed dog will cause stitch problems even if the needle and hook are fine.

What is the difference between a presser foot and a feed dog?

The feed dog, below the fabric, does the actual work of advancing it. The presser foot, above the fabric, holds it down against the feed dog so it feeds evenly instead of lifting with the needle. They always work as a pair.

Why does my sewing machine skip stitches or jam?
